Pastor Satterfield’s Comments About The Youth Missions Trip
“Standing Rock Sioux Reservation probably hosts a thousand people on short-term youth missions trips each summer, but I just want to say how impressed I was with the quality and spirit of both of the youth missions teams that we were privileged to host this year! I never had to worry about them embarrassing our church. They worked hard wherever assigned and connected so very well with the community. They shouldered their own expenses and some of ours as well. Our family and church simply could not have held 2 Vacation Bible Schools or the Youth Quest Mini-Camp and we likely would never have attempted many of the work projects without the extra man-power that was available. Both teams were such a blessing. The Crossroads Youth team included a number of teens from the Beavertown bus ministry who had been saved just recently. We trust that this outreach opportunity helped expand the vision of all the great kids and that they recognized what an impact even small acts of service can have on a community. May God grant them hearts that are sensitive to His calling for their lives.”
The Final Days of the Youth Missions Trip
After a hearty breakfast by Marie Plank on Friday, a devotional by Doug Hoffman and a time of prayer, the young people set out to wrap up all the work projects left on the “to-do list.”
First on the list was getting the concrete for the new sidewalk poured and in place and some of the guys were able to get this finished and the end result looked really nice. In the new restroom at the church, the drywall was hung, mudded and painted. A toilet was also installed and new linoleum flooring was laid in the restroom.
Outside the church, the trenches were dug, the pipe put in place and we were able to get it ready for a licensed contractor to come and make the proper connections to the city water and sewer lines. The propane tank and the church bell received a fresh coat of paint from Michael Maloyed.
There was a crew that also worked at the parsonage and they were able to scrape and paint windows, paint some exterior doors, paint an oil tank, paint a few ceilings, remodel a bathroom, landscape around the house, cut down a huge dying tree in the backyard, some electrical work and some other miscellaneous projects.
A few of the guys also worked on the church van, changing the oil, working on the interior ceiling and fixed the damaged flooring.
It was a great day for the work projects as the young people worked hard and we were able to finish several projects. We were able to complete almost all of the work that the Satterfields had wanted us to do while we were there.
Friday night we hosted the final night of the Youth Quest Mini Camp and there were close to 60 in attendance. Pastor Jordan Satterfield reports that there were over 120 different people that came the three night to this camp. It gave our team a tremendous open door to get to minister to the teens of the community. The evening activities consisted of Softball, Volleyball and Prison Dodgeball. Lynford Herrick, Terry Yoder, Collette Saez and Pastor Matt presented a skit entitled “The Sin Chair” and were able to share a gospel message at the end. After a time of mountain pies and hotdogs, the teams all competed in a “Gulp-a-Twinkie” relay.
The “Gulp-a-Twinkie” relay was the final event of the youth camp and then the points were tallied and announced. Congratulations to Cody Heidler and the Piranhas on coming in first place. They received gift cards to Dairy Queen for their teamwork and effort.
On Saturday, we got up bright and early and made the trek to the Badlands. Wall Drug was the next stop and the young people spent some time perusing the “old time” stores and purchasing some South Dakota souvenirs. But the highlight of the day was getting to see Mt. Rushmore. On our way to Mt. Rushmore, we were joined by Keith and Tasbah Lavery and their family (4 years ago our youth missions trip was with these fine missionaries).
During the night on Saturday, some of our young people saw some people looking in the doors of the school we were staying at and got scared. Thankfully, nothing became of the situation, but it sure made for some hilarious stories as some of the girls were sleeping with knives and baseball bats and the guys posted guards at the doors.
Sunday morning we went to the church to hold a 10:00 service. 10 o’clock rolled around and there was only one lady from the community present. Pastor Satterfield was a little discouraged and went out into the community trying to find people that would be interested in coming. He returned to the church and said that one couple had said they might come, but he didn’t have confidence they would. We weren’t sure what to do exactly, but we began the service and left things in the Lord’s hands. Not long into the service the couple showed up! The young people ministered in testimony and song. With tears running down their faces and hands raised in praise to God, the young people sang “He Came to Me” and God settled down on the service in a real way. The song was repeated, followed by more testimonies and we knew without a doubt that God had something special intended for this service. Pastor Matt preached a message about being obedient to God and opened the altar and the couple who almost didn’t come, came to the altar and were wonderfully saved! Praise the Lord!
Sunday afternoon was spent eating an excellent meal prepared by Marie Plank and a crew of young people, a children’s service and getting the bus loaded for the trip home. The children’s service was well attended with over 30 kids present. Pam Brought directed this service and there was songs, a lively reenactment of the Bible story Daniel and the Lions Den, a memory verse, a Smitty story and comprehensive game. The young people did an awesome job putting on the children’s service.
Sunday evening found the church packed to capacity with standing room only. There was a good group of teens present from the service that had attended our youth camp the previous week. The young people sang and shared testimonies and Pastor Matt preached a message about the brevity of life. Several young teens came to the altar and received help. Thank the Lord!
After the service, came the bittersweet time of saying goodbye to all our new friends and heading home. All in all, God blessed the youth missions trip in ways we cannot even begin to express. It was an excellent trip…to God be the glory!
Days 3 & 4 of Youth Missions Trip
On Wednesday, the young people continued to work on projects at the church. They finished painting the exterior of the church and started painting the interior. Pam Brought and Ana Cooper and crew worked on clearing the 2 acre lot, including tearing down a long section of fence, and were able to complete these tasks. Shane Cooper and company were able to get a lot accomplished with installing the restroom and Nick Rine got a good start on digging the 7 foot trench for the water line.
Wednesday night we began the Youth Quest Mini-Camp and had a great turnout of over 35 teens for the first night. The young people played softball, volleyball and kickball. After the time of activities, we gathered around a campfire and roasted hotdogs, marshmallows and made s’mores. Then we sang some choruses and Pastor Matt shared a gospel message. At the conclusion, the teens gathered with their teams for a giant shoe relay. A good time was had by all.
Marie Plank’s biscuits and gravy for breakfast began our day on Thursday. Thursday’s work was a little different in that we divided the work group into two crews. One crew worked finishing up projects at the church. While a second crew started tackling the projects at the parsonage. The trench for the water line was finished and the water line installed. Plumbing and electric was installed in the restroom and the drywall was hung. Forms were laid for a new sidewalk at the church and Jane Steiner and crew were able to finish painting the interior of the church. The group that worked at the parsonage were able to cut down a large tree, painting, do a lot of landscaping work and began working on remodeling the parsonage restroom. For supper we all thoroughly enjoyed Marie Plank’s homemade donuts.
Excitement from the first night of youth camp has definitely spread around town as we were thrilled to have over 50 people show up for the youth camp. The six teams coached by Lynford Herrick (Barracudas), Wade Herrick (Swordfish), Derrick Parthemer (Killer Whales), Nick Rine (Stingrays), Tyler Brought (Sharks) and Cody Heidler (Piranhas) competed in softball, volleyball and basketball. Again we had a great time around the campfire eating, singing songs and heard a gospel message by Pastor Matt. To close out the evening we had a great water relay with people wearing blindfolds. The young people are really enjoying themselves and we are expecting a great closing out of the camp on Friday night.
Days 1 & 2 of Youth Missions Trip
God has really been helping us on the trip so far. He gave us safety and protection as we traveled the 1,530+ miles to Little Eagle, SD and has already answered many prayers.
We arrived at Little Eagle around midnight CST and were warmly greeted by the missionaries Jordan and Kayla Satterfield and their children. We settled in and got a good nights rest.
We began work the next day at 10:00 AM. The young people worked really hard at cleaning up a two acre lot that was overgrown with weeds and has collected a lot of trash over many years. Others worked at breaking up a concrete sidewalk that we will be replacing, scraped and painted two sides of the exterior of the church, framed in the restroom, worked on setting up a permanent volleyball court, canvassed the community inviting people to our special services and helped entertain the children of the community.
At 7:00 PM, we held a gospel service with a good number of people from the community present. The church was full with standing room only. The young people sang specials songs and some shared testimonies. Pastor Matt preached a gospel message, and when the invitation was given a young mother came to the altar and gave her heart to the Lord. It was wonderful to see this young lady pour her heart out to God and find Him to be her personal Savior! Praise the Lord!
After the service, we invited everyone in attendance to the school that we are staying for a time of food and fellowship. The young people played ball with some of the teens and had a great time getting to know the people of Little Eagle. It was a great conclusion to an awesome day!
Thank you so much for your prayers! God is at work and is helping us tremendously! Please keep us in your prayers. Tonight we will start the Youth Camp for the teens. We would also appreciate your prayers for the restroom that we intend to install. Pray that we can locate the sewer and water lines, so we can hook up the plumbing for the new restroom.
3 Days Away From Youth Missions Trip
The youth missions trip team will be leaving in three days for Little Eagle, South Dakota. Looking forward to being with the Jordan Satterfield family for a week full of work projects, evangelistic services, children’s service and an evening youth camp. Youth Missions Trip
The Youth Missions Trip to Little Eagle, South Dakota is less than two weeks away. We are excited about the team of 50 people that will be going to minister to the Native Americans on the Standing Rock Sioux Reservation, July 15-23. There are two ways you can be a help:
1) We still need $8,100.00 to cover the expenses of this mission’s endeavor. You can donate online by clicking the button located on the left of your screen and following the steps.
2) Most importantly, we covet your prayers. A trip of this size and distance is no small thing and we need the help of the Lord. Pray that God not only uses us to be a blessing, but that God would use this trip to speak to our own young people.
